The Practice of Yoga Nidra

In January 2020, I had the delightful opportunity to travel to San Diego for Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® teacher training with Jennifer Reis. On several occasions, I had the privilege to experience yoga nidra as a student. I felt the benefits of the practice first-hand. Enrolling in the training was my pathway to gain better understanding of yoga nidra and develop my skills to teach it.

What is Yoga Nidra?

Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® is accessible and nourishing, allowing you to experience deeper levels of inner freedom than you ever imagined possible. -Jennifer Reis

Yoga Nidra, pronounced with a short “i” as in “it,” is also known as yogic sleep. It is a practice where a teacher guides students into a deeper level of consciousness. By achieving a deeper level of consciousness, students often experience complete relaxation. With practice, the thinking mind is able to be at rest.

There is a difference between Yoga Nidra and Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra®. Yoga Nidra is a general term used in the western world to describes various forms of guided meditation and relaxation. Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® is a unique practice developed by Certified Yoga Therapist Jennifer Reis.

What Makes Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® Unique

In Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® a trained instructor will guide you through the five levels of your being to reach a deeper state of consciousness.  The five levels of being are known as koshas. Human beings have five koshas – the physical body, the energetic body, the emotional body, the mental body (or mind), the intuitive body, and the spiritual self.

Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® has eight stages. A certified teacher is able to guide you through each stage to achieve a restful state and restore balance to the body, mind and spirit.

Jennifer Reis developed Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® to make it adaptable for everyone. In a typical session, a teacher will invite students to create their own intentions, visualizations, and images. Each person has the unique opportunity to benefit from a personalized healing experience.

Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® benefits students by:

helping them experience freedom from the thinking mind.

reducing stress and anxiety.

leaving the mind feeling more focused and at ease.

nourishing the body’s innate ability to heal and restore itself.

offering the same benefits as a two hour nap in a 20 minute session.

Why I Practice

Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra® helps me manage stress, enjoy healthier relationships, and it gives me access to experiencing more joy in my daily life. When I practice, I sleep better which allows me to be more productive throughout the day. I feel better, I can think more clearly, and I feel less overwhelmed by the day to day bustle.
